My Question of the Day: A really good friend, with a very poor work ethic, asks you to recommend him/her for a job in your company. What do you do?

My Question of the Day: You have a good friend or relative who is determined to enter a competition to do something for which s/he totally has no talent. For years, you and so many others have tried to tell this person that this particular thing just isn’t his/her “cup of tea,” but s/he is absolutely determined to enter a competition that will expose him/her to the criticism of thousands of people. What do you do?

My 2 Cents: You can’t save a person who doesn’t want to be saved. I would make one, last attempt to ask him/her to think about what s/he is getting in to, and then I’d let it happen.

In the end, I’d be there to support him/her. I’m no talent scout, s/he may have the spark that someone else will see and know how to hone, so my good friend or relative can realize his/her dream. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

My Question of the Day for 19 January 2010 – RESULTS

-

The Question: One of your close friends is a total flake (lacks follow-through), and it really annoys you. What do you do?

My 2 Cents: If I have a close friend who just recently became a total flake, then I would have to delve a little deeper into why s/he has changed.

I say this because not too many years ago, I went through some terrible depression, and I was that flaky friend for a period of time. Those who know me well knew that wasn’t my style, and they were very concerned about me. Those who didn’t know me well at all assumed that “lack of follow-through” was just my M.O., and those acquaintances died off.

If I have a close friend who is a total flake (lacks follow-through), and s/he has always been that way ever since I’ve known him/her, I’d–and some of you said–make it a point NOT to depend on him/her in times of need. No one’s perfect, I know, but I’m not going to keep setting myself up to be upset when my flaky friend doesn’t come through for me.

Take a few moments to check out the tweets from Twitter on this subject:

———-

Mitch Mitchell Mitch_M  I don’t hang arond them that much; they become fringe friends.

Tomi Clark tclarkusa  No biggie. Just be careful of what you ask of that friend knowing they could leave you in a tight spot.

Reads4Pleasure Reads4Pleasure  cut her loose. I’ve had a friend like that. It’s too stressful & disappointing.

Connie confab35  Always follow through. Most behavior that annoys us reminds us of our own shortcomings. Also, judging sets us up for judgement!

Dawn N. McKenzie ddiamond61  have a heart to heart and tell them citing examples, caveat it with love and care as you desire them to be better! But ask 1st…meaning ask if they are open to you sharing a candid observation in love knowing they may or may not agree

Arnetta Meekins acmeek  Stop fooling with them when it comes to making plans….But then what else is there?….So, just stop fooling with them.

ibster ibstein ibster  I have this problem. Anticipate flakiness and work around it. Make sure they know they can’t be a flake around you.

PROTECTED TWEETERi dont have patience for ppl like that.. id dump em.

TraceyEsq treschic67  GREAT question of the Day but I can’t answer it..why u ask? because I’m the ULTIMATE flaky friend.I’m always BUSY..LOL

black fist blackfistrising  either pray for them or pity them. Hug or distance yourself.

Corrine Johnson LadyJay91  4 my close friend that’s the flack I would have to love him/her from a distance & not take whatever they say too seriously.

MsShana MissMeandI  remember not to make plans with her and just roll with it (My best friend is like that…LOL)

S. Laraia dryskywater  1st i’d check myself (did some unknown flaky behavior on my part attract this person?) then i’d limit contact, or end it.

PROTECTED TWEETER  if close friend then it doesnt bother me! aquaintenance..i would not hang w/them.

Pettra Tyus-Mapp Pettra88  Joke about it

DesignsByOnye DesignsByOnye  Get. Rid. Of. Her. Flaky ppl are not 2 b relied upon or trusted. I will ditch a flaky friend faster than an ugly pair of shoes.

The Official Reasy! Mo_Rease  I wouldn’t depend on that friend for much.

lt md20737  I have a friend just like. I just dont depend , or expect anything of her. But I still love her.

Gloria A NightShade10  let them know when they promise or say they’re going to do something “yeh right” then when “deer in headlights look” explain

Sasha X. Zeromind xsashagirl  You keep that friend compartmentalized and keep it moving.

Linda Bilyeu sunshine625  ex-friend…no more drama!

Chela chela816  Ugh, I have one now! I get annoyed but I love her. I just try to make sure I don’t have to depend on her for anything big

Risha Holmes rishaholmes  haha, great question! i have several friends like that, “grin and bear it” lol

Joshua Gibson JoshDamage  politely address the situation and let my friend know it’s not acceptable
