Joey Pinkney

Joey Pinkney’s blog features book reviews and author interviews. His main objective is to give authors extra exposure.

Joey started his blog in June 2006 to do something constructive with his obsession with the internet. He first used his site as a vehicle to write about things such as weight loss and acne prevention. His site slowly transitioned from those various topics to be a site strictly about books and authors.

In addition to this website, Joey uses other platforms to spread the word about different authors and books that with which he comes in contact. Joey writes book reviews and has conducted interviews for UrbanBookSource.com. He has also written book reviews for C & B Books . You can also find some of Joey’s reviews on Amazon.com.

Joey’s “5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…” author interview series has been a labor of love. The series gives authors a chance to explain their book from their perspective, and the reader gets a behind-the-scenes look at what it took to make the book happen. This series has featured self-published authors and authors from the major publishing houses, virtually unknown authors to Essence and/or New York Times Best Sellers, male and female authors, urban lit to science fiction to nonfiction to poetry.

Joey has recently added “author” to his repertoire with a contribution to Peace In The Storm Publishing’s The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology. His short story, “Like Father, Like Son,” follows Terrence Greene as he struggles with the stress of a wayward stepson and a wife who defends her son no matter what. True to his vows, he tries to be an example to both his wife and son as he takes a good look at his own views on faith and spirituality.

If you’ve ever read my bio, you’ll note a few lines of dedication to the person who gave me the idea to start asking My Questions of the Day.

Just in case you did read my bio, and haven’t made the connection, this is the chickof whom I’m speaking when I write of my inspiration.

I’m very happy to have the opportunity to introduce her to you, but instead of putting it in my own words, I’ve decided to let Jubi say it herself.

My last relationship was in August 2006, so its been almost 4 years since I was someone’s gf.

Narcel Reedus

Born in Gary, Indiana, Narcel G. Reedus is a writer, director, independent filmmaker and media artist. He has won national awards for his dramatic short films “For Colored Boys Who’ve Considered Homicide,” “Race Juice: An Elixir for the Soul,” “Waddie Welcome” and “The Fight.” He also won a Peabody for his writing on the NPR radio documentary “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” His films have screened at the Lincoln Center in New York, on PBS, in Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Austin, Chicago, Atlanta and in international film festivals in Rotterdam, Bermuda, Milan and Berlin. Narcel earned his MFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and taught film at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Narcel says:

I don’t remember when I first fell in love with film. It may have been in elementary school when we took a field trip to Chicago to see Sounder. Maybe in 1972 when I first saw Shaft at the State Theatre in Gary, Indiana. Perhaps it was at my first screening of The Fight when a woman gasped at the images I created on screen.

My relationship with film is co-dependent, enduring, therapy, romantic, beautiful, and heart wrenching. I’ve discovered film intertwined within my tragedies and my personal life intertwined within my films. I am somehow connected to the unspoken, the underrepresented, and the hard to see. I feel a deep responsibility to make silence and the blatantly unobvious the hero.

In the fall of 2009, Narcel relocated to Atlanta and began production on “Nine in Alabama,” a feature-length documentary about children sent to live in nursing homes.

That project grew into the larger project, the “Not Home” documentary, where Narcel travels the United States chronicling the history and issue of children being housed in nursing homes.

Yasmin Shiraz

Yasmin Shiraz is an award-winning and nationally acclaimed filmmaker and author of Retaliation and The Blueprint for My Girls empowerment series for teen girls. Her books are used as the foundation of violence prevention programs as well as tools of guidance, inspiration and empowerment at schools and non-profit programs throughout the United States.

Her first film project, Can She Be Saved? addresses the issue of teen girl fights and has received awards, official selections, and honorable mentions from The Women’s International Festival, Indie Fest, The San Diego Black Film Festival, The Texas Black Film Festival among others. In addition, Shiraz is the 2010 NC Black Film Festival Emerging Filmmaker.

Her latest book Retaliation, a novel about a community’s response to violence, led Shiraz to partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs in creating violence prevention programs for youth and was honored by the American Library Association with being named to the 2009 Top Ten Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers. Her Retaliation Violence Prevention initiative has been implemented in various violence-prevention programs for middle school and high school students in Washington, DC and Syracuse, NY.

Shiraz is a highly sought after radio & TV youth expert appearing on FOX, ABC, NBC and CBS news affiliates nationwide. Ebony, Essence, CosmoGirl! and Teen People magazines have featured reviews of Shiraz’s Blueprint books and/or have asked her to contribute to advice articles for teens.

Yasmin Shiraz is an empowerment speaker who has lectured for The NAACP, National Urban League, and numerous universities. Her topics include: Violence Prevention, Success & Motivation, The Politics of Hip Hop Culture, Entrepreneurship, The Blueprint for My Girls empowerment series, and others.

Shiraz is the Chief Executive Officer of The Signals Agency, a niche marketing firm which creates unique education and empowerment opportunities and events for youth focused companies. Her agency has already worked with The YWCA, Illinois State University, Girls Inc, The University of Delaware, Girl Scouts, The US Postal Service, Planned Parenthood, The Boys and Girls Clubs of America, The WNBA’s Washington Mystics, Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. and many others. In addition, she is the former publisher and editor-in-chief of Mad Rhythms, one of the most widely-read urban entertainment college publications in America and the former president of College Entertainment, Inc., a marketing firm that created college tours and marketing opportunities for corporations nationwide.

Shiraz is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. She has her masters and bachelors degrees in Sociology, having graduated from Hampton University and Morehead State University, respectively.
