My Question of the Day: It’s been said that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” With that thought in mind, when you’re presented with pictures by a proud parent of his/her child, and the child doesn’t necessarily appeal to your sense of beauty, what do you say?
My 2 Cents: I try not to comment on looks, since looks are relative. I usually ask how old the child was when the picture was taken, or I comment on a particular feature that I find attractive. If all else fails, I may ask something like, “Who does the family say s/he looks like?” or “Aw, look at him/her. Children are such a blessing, aren’t they?”.

My Question of the Day for 13 July 2009 – UPDATED
My Question of the Day: Is it easier for a person considered thin and attractive to get a job over a person considered to be the fat and unattractive?
My 2 Cents: In our vain, beauty-consumed society, I say it is easier for a person considered thin and attractive to get a job over a person considered fat and unattractive. Some companies won’t hire overweight individuals because if they have health issues, it causes the insurance premiums to rise for all workers. Still other companies won’t hire people they consider unattractive, especially for receptionist positions, because they believe that person’s looks reflect on the company; the better-looking they think you are the better their company looks.
I’m not saying it’s right. I’m just saying this in the mindset of some employers.

No more tallies, folks. Many answers don’t fit into YES or NO categories, so take a few moments to check out the tweets from Twitter on this subject:

ethelmgibbs Okay, I’m going to need more space. 140 won’t do! (see her comments below)
LibraFitnessAus Unfortunately, yes, I think a thin person is more likely to be hired.
shargrove depends on whose doing the hiring & if there is preconceived notion/stereotype for the job; compare sales vs. maintenance
Pettra88 Yes, but beauty fades, dumb is forever.
CocosButter Depends some : Is it easier 4 a person considered thin & attractive to get a job over a person considered to be the opposite?
PhatCrayonz test reportadly claimed yes
girly1121 i think it boils down to confidence.as a hiring manager, i can honestly say that the most confident articulate and well prepared wins
nailtaxi Yes, it is easier for the thin and attractive person…provided their experience is the same. and maybe even not!
iamvictorious oh don’t get me wrong I’m doing ok but I’m no where I should be. Look at successful women and what do you see (save Oprah).
chenrae I think it depends on the interviewer and their frame of reference envy or adoration
PROTECTED TWEETER Yes, I think it is easier,,
iamvictorious I agree with the DM. I often feel that my weight holds me back. Weight is often a symptom of those afraid of success.
Sincerious1 re: qotd: Not sure, but I’d hope it would depend on Character and Presentation rather than looks.
TZA_Unlimited I don’t think so, I’m an attractive avg size man and work is hard to find now
BLKMGK My answer is NO. I have hired based on qualifications and the interview(s), never based on looks.
Mum_of_Six I’d love to say ‘No of course not’ but sadly I think it most probably does happen
eagleascent YES unless applying 2 b Sumo Wrestler Is it easier for a person considered thin and attractive to get a job over the opposite?
bprickett QOD: We fool ourselves if we don’t know all kinds of prejudice are involved in hiring process. Not just weight! (I’ve seen it)
DaedaDaedalus Time and time again it has been proven that more attractive people get more opportunities.
PROTECTED TWEETER I think so. Unfortunately I’ve met too many ppl who were hired but couldn’t buy a clue if they wanted to. All looks & no brain.
zohaibusman Attractive personality matters. My Answer is yes
AlisasGotIt Yes it is easier we are a superficial society.
writeoffusion Unfortunately, YES. Qualifications in some’s eyes are a nice shape and being flirtatious, so giving the choice, that qualifies.
PROTECTED TWEETER a fact..being overweight /obese & in the eye of the beholder not so attractive physically is a definite neg in job hunting
PROTECTED TWEETER If thats the case I think nicer looking people get the job, corporate jobs are all about and image. But I really think it varies
davidsbass Sadly yes, particularly in a sales or “customer facing” job, though admitting it would invite lawsuits.
cbpower Put me in the yes column Faydra. It’s patently unfair, but true.
IamRah Yes
