My Question of the Day: Olivia and Marcus have decided not to allow their child, Sarah, to return to daycare. For one, it’s too expensive. Secondly, they aren’t convinced that the workers there are actually paying enough attention to the children.

They decide to hire an at-home, child caregiver who speaks a different language. Olivia and Marcus are native French-speakers, and they would like Sarah to learn Japanese. They reason that Sarah will be totally fluent in both Japanese and French if her caregiver speaks Japanese during the day and they speak to her in French during the evenings and on weekends.

There is just one snag in Olivia and Marcus’ plan. Marcus is opposed to hiring someone who solely speaks Japanese and cannot speak French, also. Olivia thinks whomever they hire should only speak Japanese, since she and Marcus will be the French-speaking influence in Sarah’s life.

Who do you think is right?

My 2 Cents: My god-sister found herself in this situation in France when she was trying to get a job as an au pair. One of the ladies with which she interviewed didn’t want a bilingual caregiver, even though the lady couldn’t speak any French.

My god-sister tried to explain to the lady that it might be a good idea to have an au pair who could speak English, as well as French, in case there was an emergency, but the lady refused to hire her.

I’m going to have to agree with Marcus because of the point my god-sister made. If there’s an emergency, and you can’t communicate with the caregiver, that could turn a bad situation into a worse one.

Please note that I will be picking winners for the months in 2011 that have not been done yet. I've gotten behind, but I'm a woman of my word. Beginning, 01 January 2012, there will only be one winner per month, and that one winner will receive a $30 Amazon gift card. For the months in 2011 that still need winners, there will still be two, $20 gift card winners. The change will take effect starting 01 January 2012. See details.
