My Question of the Day: Jordan is trying to potty train his two-year-old son, Jordan Jr., of whom he has primary custody. Jordan’s ex-wife, Lydia, gets Jordan Jr. every other week, and she is also helping with the potty-training duties. The problem is that Jordan and Lydia have different ideas about what to do when Jordan Jr. has an accident on himself. Lydia believes spanking Jordan Jr. will stop him from wetting himself, but Jordan is adamantly opposed to spanking Jordan Jr. for any reason, especially not for wetting himself.
Who do you think is right?
My 2 Cents: I think spanking a potty-training child for wetting him/herself would be just as, if not more, traumatic as having the accident itself.
Although I’m not a parent, I can’t see how physical pain would keep a two-year-old from wetting him/herself.
I’m going to have to agree with Jordan on this one.

While I’m not necessarily against spanking in certain situations, I don’t think you should spank a child for an accident like that. Jordan is only 2 years old and learning; accidents are part of that learning process. I think positive reinforcement would work much better than spanking him for something over which he doesn’t have full control yet.

LikeDislikeSpanking a child when they have an accident is a big no-no in my book. Its an accident, right? The child is not deliberating trying to soil themselves. If I was Jordan, I would not let the mother see the child during potty training. Spanking would hurt more than help during this stage.
I’ve potty trained one child and we are currently potty training our 2 1/2 year old. We never punish for accidents. We try to not even show frustration at accidents. Potty training is a major milestone in a child’s life. Why would you mar that milestone with negativity?

LikeDislikeWell, I spanked my kid and she trained quick. So, I’m all for the spanking!

LikeDislikeSounds like Lydia needs lessons on potty training a child. Spanking a child because they had an accident? If Jordan Sr. really wanted to make an issue of it, as the primary custodial parent he could pursue the matter in court.

LikeDislikeJordan Sr is correct. Spanking is NEVER acceptable. It sends out the signal that violence is OK. I would recommend speaking with Jordan Jr Pediatrician. He or She may have suggestions on how to Potty train a Child. I would also suggest Lydia attends a series of parenting courses. The spankings she’s giving her son could Emotionally Scar him.

LikeDislikeI think Jordan is – punishing a toddler for something he can’t help is not the way to properly potty train him. Encouraging tactics should prove more effective.
