My Question of the Day: It’s been said that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” With that thought in mind, when you’re presented with pictures by a proud parent of his/her child, and the child doesn’t necessarily appeal to your sense of beauty, what do you say?
My 2 Cents: I try not to comment on looks, since looks are relative. I usually ask how old the child was when the picture was taken, or I comment on a particular feature that I find attractive. If all else fails, I may ask something like, “Who does the family say s/he looks like?” or “Aw, look at him/her. Children are such a blessing, aren’t they?”.

I always say “He/She is precious” and they are to the parents.

LikeDislikeI say… “Aww…Look!” And smile and hand the picture back.

LikeDislikeLove this question. I wouldn’t want to be rude or anything so i would merely tell them “Oh a baby”. When i think about it I’ve never had anyone with an ugly babt ask me if I thought their baby was ugly. This is probably because they already know. Smile.

LikeDislikeOnly a complete jerk would go out of their way to rain on the parade of a proud parent. In case you’re wondering, I’ve been tempted to rain on many parades in my time. Never did it though, I’m not that cold.
I had an annoying acquaintance at the gym who would always talk about her kid. I thought the kid was an infant, but the child was 4. She never said 4, she always denoted the kids age in months. She would say, “Oh Mike is 48 months old.” She was way too excited about her kid. She showed me a picture of Mike…poor chile…I just smiled & bolted.

LikeDislike“You must be the proudest [mom] [dad] in the world!”
“Awwwww. How perfect and how tiny!”
“What an amazing miracle!”
I never talk cute about babies. The less we identify beauty as important in life, the better off we all are.
It isn’t about appeal–babies are either all adorable or all look like little ol’ men–it’s about the joy of the parents. My opinion isn’t part of that at all. My honoring their joy is.

LikeDislikeJust say “Awwwww what a sweetie!!” (but that tends to be my basic answer to any baby photos…gorgeous or not so gorgeous, and really babies are so precious anyway who can help it!)

LikeDislikeI’ve only seen a couple of ugly babies in my lifetime. Parents love their children regardless of how they look. I usually point out some endearing quality – like chubby cheeks or pretty eyes.

LikeDislikeSee. You said ugly. I didn’t say ugly. I just want the record to be clear on that.

LikeDislikeEven the ones who aren’t commercial worthy tend to be cute in some way, at least in my experience. Or I would just do the “awww a little baabbyyy!” thing…they don’t listen to what you’re saying sometimes…just the tone LOL.

LikeDislikeMy reaction would be to not say anything, just smile and Nod OR do what I normally do; smile and Say “AwwwWwww”

LikeDislikeI just exclaim how cute the child is. I don’t think there are ugly children – they are all lovely and what would saying oh your child looks plain to me accomplish? just a lot of hurt
