My Question of the Day: When you’re building something and/or putting something together, do you read all the directions first or do you just dive in and get going?
My 2 Cents: When I’m building something and/or putting something together, sometimes I read all the directions and sometimes I just dive in and get going. It depends on how intricate the project happens to be.

I read all the directions before digging in. However, I really am not a DIY type gal, even with all directions, I can’t make everything right. For example, I honestly have issues with some IKEA manuals.

LikeDislikeGreat question!! I tend to lay put all the parts just to make sure it’s all there then go to step One of the assembly instructions. I really should read them all first but I like the surprise of finding out what’s next.
I’m also regularly amazed when I don’t have any extra parts as the opposite tends to be the norm. Then I have to go back through all the steps to see what’s been overlooked.

LikeDislikeI read the instructions, but in stages. I skim first to make sure there are no surprises, then follow step by step. I’m pretty methodical about that when putting things together because I know that manufacturers are not the most intuitive lot…

LikeDislikeI read all the directions, then I “visualize” how I’m going to finish the task. More often than not, I try to make sure that the directions make sense, and that I now how the sequence of steps are to be completed.

LikeDislikeI’m a man. I don’t need directions. Or a map for that matter.

LikeDislikeI almost always read instructions..this way if I mess something up, I can correct that one mistake..not do it all over again

LikeDislikeI read the instructions before I start putting it together. Then I try to put it together completely without ever referring back to the instructions.

LikeDislikeI dive right in. It’s not as if I’m going to remember all those steps if I read over them first. I just put Tab A into Slot B and get the show on the road. I’m the official go-to guy for assembling stuff around here.

LikeDislikeI am notorious for just putting stuff together. I HATE reading instruction manuals. So its usually my husband that puts stuff together. I have no patience for it.

LikeDislikeI normally pull all the pieces out, organize them, and then put the thing together one step at a time according to the instructions.

LikeDislikeI usually read through the directions twice but it’s easier just to use common sense

LikeDislikeI dive right in the majority of the time. Computers? Dive in. Android phone? Dive right in. (You should see the look on the Best Buy’s rep face when she was explaining it to me and I’m like “I got it”. She told me “do you have a” and I said “Yes, I have a google account” and then she said “it will…” and I say “sync with contacts, calendar, Google Voice and all.” She said “what’s Google Voice?”) I only reference the manual twice during the whole 5 months of owning my Android phone.
The only items I read the manual on is with anything that requires complex assembly, such as desks. Not because I don’t have faith, but more because every time I dive into it without the manual, I’m always left with spare parts…
… which can be disastrous later.
