My Question of the Day: There’s a saying, and I’m paraphrasing, “It’s better to stick with the “devil” you know than to chance it with the “devil” you don’t know.” With that in mind, if you have to choose between a familiar but unpleasant situation and an unfamiliar situation that could possibly be pleasant, which would you pick?
My 2 Cents: I’d have to take the chance that I wouldn’t find a “devil” in a different situation, especially if I was certain of the “devil” in my current situation. I am not going to suffer needlessly because I’m not sure what could possibly lie ahead.
The way I see it is that if I find another “devil” in the next situation, I’ll move on to another situation until I find the peace I deserve.
Word.

I think I’d probably take a chance that the unfamiliar situation may turn out to be pleasant. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. And I already know there’s no possibility of a good experience with the familiar situation, so why bother?

LikeDislike“the lesser of the two evils?” or just fear of the unknown. unfamiliar territory is rarely traveled if you’re playing it safe. don’t want to get all radical up in here, but in our communities, i see this a LOT – especially in local politics. i’ve been playing this game for a while, but i have seen it has not gotten u very far. we continue to choose the familiar b/c we know what to expect – good or bad. takes too much time and effort to investigate or just THINK a moment about the future and state of the community. so we will vote for name recognition without doing a thorough evaluation on that name’s past performance and any improvements that name has done during their last tenure.
i typically root for the underdog; so in these matters, it is easy for me to take the road less traveled. basically, the unfamiliar is a risk to our comfort zone. not many are willing to come out of that. however, when you do, it is so much more rewarding. at least you can have much more respect for YOURSELF for sticking your neck out there. not everyone will agree with you and some will abandon you, but at the end of the day, your final evaluation of self is all that matters when you want to sleep at night…

LikeDislikeIf I know something for sure is unpleasant then I’d go for the situation that has the potential to be pleasant. For sure!

LikeDislikethere are too many variables to consider to give this question the straight answer that it deserves. it’s just not specific enough. i suppose you could evenly divide this amongst those who take risks and those who don’t. but frankly, anyone will take a risk in another direction if the circumstances get dicey enough.
this is a wonderful forum, but it can only go as far as you’ll take it. you want specific direct answers? give specific direct questions. (just sayin’.)

LikeDislikeYour assumption is that I’m looking for a specific response.
I’m not.
The questions are open-ended to encourage everyone to share their own perspective, not one I want them to have.
Other people’s opinions, points of view and/or perspectives are not necessarily specific and direct, so neither are many of my questions.
Thanks for validating that my blog is accomplishing the exact thing I’d hoped.
All points of view have value. I’m just saying…

LikeDislikeWell, that would actually have to depend on the two situations. If it’s gonna be something life changing, like taking a new job vs. the one I have which isn’t in jeopardy, then I’d have to think real hard about that one. If it was something like, going to eat at one restaurant that I have never been to vs. going to eat at a new and up and coming one, I’d chance the new restaurant, if just for kicks. The situations aren’t always so easy to make a decision on; some take a whole lot of thinking and praying and pondering on.

LikeDislikeI meant going to a restaurant that I’ve always gone to vs. going to one that is new and up and coming…..

LikeDislikeI’m so done with unpleasantness and negativity. I would much rather experience the pleasant fun times of life.

LikeDislikeIf a situation is bad, then I’ll change. There can only be an upside, if not then I’m back to where I was prior. Nothing lost there. I have a laissez faire attitude about life in general. Do as you please and make changes as you see fit that will help improve you.

LikeDislikeNothing ventured, nothing gained.
I rather gain something new, even if it’s just more experience, good or bad.

LikeDislikeLife is more full when you take chances…or so I believe. If I had to choose between the two. I’d go for the unfamiliar. You may enjoy it, but you’ll never know unless you step out of the norm. GO FOR IT!!!

LikeDislikeIf I was happy with the familiar outcome in the past, then I would probably stick with the familiar one until I get sick of it or until I feel bold enough to try something unfamiliar.
