My Question of the Day: If it would help you understand the opposite gender better, would you be willing to switch from being a woman to a man or a man to a woman for a week to gain this knowledge?
(someone sent me this question several months ago, but I can’t recall who it is; please remind me if this is your question and I’ll make certain to give you credit; thanks!)
My 2 Cents: I had to give this one some serious thought.
I’m going to have to say no. Switching genders for a week would not be an option for me.
I don’t think that’s enough time to really understand what it is to be a man. Being the gender you are is so complex that it would definitely take much more than seven days to really understand the opposite gender.
The question makes me think of John Howard Griffin, the author of Black Like Me. Mr. Griffin wrote a book about his experiences of becoming a black man in the Deep South during Jim Crow rule (the 1950s).

No I would never switch being a woman in my opinion is a blessing. I believe shadowing them or reading a journal would be a better option.

LikeDislikeSure, why not? They say you never really understand a person until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. Obviously, I wouldn’t suddenly know everything there is to know about men in just one week, but it would be a start.

LikeDislikeNah, no thanks. I understand the opposite sex well enough. LOL.

LikeDislikeAbsolutely not. I like the level of understanding I have now. If I knew everything, it might not be as interesting.
LikeDislikeNot for the purpose of understanding the opposite sex because I don’t think that would do it. Everyone is so different that I believe all the switch would achieve would be understanding that one person, for that one week, better.
But I do think it would be interesting to see myself the way others see me….scary, but interesting.

LikeDislikePeace,
Not at all. It’s not entirely necessary to switch genders in order to understand one another. The pure and simple thing is connectiing via conversation. If either side wants to know how the other fares, then they need to be in a setting that will foster and nurture that manner of communication. Doing something as drastic as living as a being for a week that you have no physical relation to just to learn more will offer nothing. Emotions are emotions and facts are facts.
Peace

LikeDislikeI don’t think a week would be enough time. Besides, I have 3 sisters – so I think I have an idea. The key is to watch their actions, not what they say. Whatever they say, just take the opposite stance.

LikeDislikeSure. I would be gamed for switching to the opposite sex for a week in an effort to better understand the opposite sex.

LikeDislikei think it would be a good experience to have however i don’t think a week is enough time to get over novelty of having different body parts let alone understand the totality of what it is to be a woman. But i think it would definitely help.
