My Question of the Day: Many of us have heard it said that tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us. With that in mind, do you make it a consistent habit to show and tell the people closest to you that you love and/or care about them?
My 2 Cents: I can’t say I’m as consistent as I’d like to be, but I’m doing much better than I used to do. Over the past several years, I started telling my immediate family members I love and appreciate them. It was always something that was unspoken between us all, but I decided to begin saying it and showing it, not just showing it. Now when I talk to my sister and brothers, I end  the conversation with “I love you,” and they reciprocate. It’s the same with my parents.

I’ve also, in recent years, made it a habit to tell everyone I love them, because I actually do love every person, even if I don’t like their ways. Love is unconditional. Like is optional. Love is a part of my DNA.

When you read this, know that I love you.

My Question of the Day: What’s something you believed to be true, but you eventually found out it’s just an urban legend?

My 2 Cents: I was in college before I learned that Abraham Lincoln wasn’t against slavery as much as he was for a “more perfect union.” His bid to end slavery was about economics, not humanity.

There were two Emancipation Proclamations and a constitutional amendment before slavery was truly abolished.

The first proclamation—22 September 1862—simply warned that slavery would end in all states still in rebellion to the Union by the first day of the next year.

The second proclamation—01 January 1863—was the enactment of the first proclamation, which only freed slaves in states that were in rebellion against the Union. These were states where Lincoln had no power, anyway, so that proclamation was fairly useless. Slaves in the Union, the states where Lincoln did have power, were still in bondage

It wasn’t until the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on 18 December 1865 that chattel slavery persons of African descent was forever banished in America.

Thereafter, Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, was hugely pro-colonization. He wanted to send all freedmen out of the Union, even allowing Congress to set aside $600,00 for the effort. Lincoln also helped the American Colonization Society, mostly spearheaded by Northerners, raise money to remove freedmen from the Union.

Don’t take my word for any of this, though. Do your research. I learned all this as an African-American Studies major at Howard University.
