My Question of the Day: Thinking back to when you were in school, what was your least-favorite subject, and how did your dislike for that subject affect your educational/career choices once you became an adult?

My 2 Cents: My least-favorite subject in school was Science. I never seemed to have any teacher that could make that subject interesting enough for me to truly engage. As a result, I’ll never be a Crime Scene Investigator. Sigh.

History used to kill me. Especially because I was curious about black history and African history. I used to sit in the library after school for hours and soak up everything about anything.
I was amazed at how much history was skewed. Thanksgiving, slavery, world events… I was frustrated.
This made it hard to pass American History in college. I was very hard for a half-way grown man to sit in a class and listen to a bunch perceived lies. Especially when I could check books out of the college library to refute what the teacher was teaching and testing on.
So I got a D the first time, realized I just paid for a class I failed and got an A the second time. Done deal.
Then there was Music History. (But that’s another episode…)

LikeDislikemy least favorite subject was math. even though i excelled and pushed to pre-calculus in high school, it was only for the credits and for good standing on report cards and college applications. i didn’t really enjoy it after basic math. things started to fall apart when i took pre-algebra in the 7th grade and i could not grasp the concept after that. it was then that i was just “getting by”…i was able to get decent grades, but without any real understanding of the rules and principles. my thang was english! those rules are ingrained. but that math was a partner i could not get next to…
acting was my career of choice and still is. but if you’re not a WORKING actor with REGULAR work, you have to be practical. so i was practical in the jobs i got. now, i’m finding out that had i paid more attention, i could have had more lucrative jobs and jobs that were longer lasting…i would not have had to be as creative with my resume..there is nothing creative about math – it is what it is. so say, i could have had a strong accounting background or be in the banking business. my attention to detail would work well in those fields. but i considered them boring and restrictive. but they pays the bills.
to fast forward to today, i find myself that i’m actually going to need it. i have returned to school and i need math BEFORE my required statistics course for PSYCHOLOGY. i do not believe i need it. i’m hearing different points of view. but before i can move to the next level (transfer schools), math is standing in my way of “greener” pastures. i’m just sick. so now, i will have to study on my own, use online study programs, and perhaps a tutor to get the concepts down in order to move to the next phase. i neglected to take my math early enough because i did not think i would need it…actually, i just avoided it. some of it is coming back, but it’s retention and total understanding i want. no more getting by…i will need this to conduct research. so my future work in the community and for humanity depends on it..
as you get older, you get wiser. no time for the shoulda, woulda, coulda. i still love acting and writing. i still do practical things and accept practical jobs. but today, i am more realistic. i can bridget he two somehow and make it work. and to my surprise, math (for now) is that bridge…
great question!

LikeDislikeMy least fave subject was History and only due to the fact that it was my first “C”. I had a bike wreck during my 6th grade yr of school and suffered a concussion and busted my chin. I was out of school for a few days and when I returned my History teacher was the only teacher who did not let me make up missed work and I subsequently failed an exam over the material. It didn’t really affect my career choice but certainly impacted the way I conduct my business.

LikeDislikeI wasn’t a fan of Government, I guess had little patience for politcs and that stands today. I guess its when I found out that persons that are elected get paid by private people by way of lobbyist, while Soldiers who fight in Americas wars are strictly prohibited from the same practices.
I am a Soldier now so I guess I didn’t learn anything.

LikeDislikeMy least favorite subject was Science. Even though I had honors classes for most of my other subjects I always chose the easiest Science class I could find. It never interested me. Which is funny, because after I became an adult, I fell in love with science fiction.

LikeDislikeMy least favorite subject was social studies I guess. I don’t think it affected my career except for the fact that I’m not teaching the subject!

LikeDislikeI was never too interested in history. And I think it was not so much the subject but the teacher. He was just so boring. It was like listening to a dead log. I think it motivated my adult life because the first subject I registered for was History. I did really well in it, and it was because the teacher was so engaging.
