My Question of the Day for 13 April 2010 – UPDATED
My Question of the Day: Often in the sports world, we hear about this or that athlete being accused of “doping” or being proven to have used performance-enhancing substances that are banned. Should all regulations be lifted against steroids and other performance-enhancing substances and athletes just allowed to do what they feel they need to do to be at the top of their chosen field?
My 2 Cents: I’m going to have to agree with everyone else and say that regulations should NOT be lifted against steroids and other performance-enhancing substances. When I think about this happening, I think about this small community of athletes who become almost monstrous and sub-human. That may be stretching it, but there would be people who would have no limits.
Natural is always better, even in athletics.

No. If people were mature and had reasonable boundaries, I would be all for it. But some performance enhancers have proven to be detrimental to the athletes long-term health and even fatal.
Those drugs also give children artificial short-cuts. Why develop naturally when I can get stronger and faster much quicker? So, no…

LikeDislikeNo! Not only is it ILLEGAL, its Sending Kids The Wrong Message! There’s so many folks out there with NATURAL talent that go unrecognized because the Folks on the Performance Enhancing Drugs OutShine Them!

LikeDislikeFirstly, Absolutely not. Making these drugs legal just adds variables to the equation that we don’t need. I seriously doubt it would actually have a positive effect on the entertainment value of the sport.
Secondly, I’m not sure why people think drugs make athletes that much better at what they do. Most of these drugs may make you stronger, which may make you slightly faster (which is debatable since excess muscle makes you heavier), but most sports require actual skills.
Sure, doping gives a slight advantage, but you still have to have skills to begin with unless your “sport” of choice is bodybuilding. Throwing muscles at someone doesn’t make them an athlete.

LikeDislikeIf they are no regulations on “doping” that will take fun, sportmanship, excitement, and over life out of sports. It will become whomever can manufacture the best drug will win. I believe hard work, focus, and talent all have equal roles in success. I dont see any room for enhancers.

LikeDislikeHeck no. Athletes should be showcasing their God-given abilities. If performance enhancers are allowed, just about anyone could compete at a professional level.
LikeDislikeWith absolute certainty, no. The argument that they are trying to be the best in their field is outrageous. We villify banking executives who bend the rules to be the best in their field, yet we accept doping in professional athletes who are role models in our society.
If anything, the regulations need to be tightened. Honestly, I think that anyone who is found to be cheating in professional or college level sports should be permanently banned. I don’t want children thinking it is okay to cheat to be the best, nor do I want society to celebrate cheaters by allowing them into the record books or Halls of Fame. Those pinnacles are reserved for professionals who are the best not only at putting a ball over the fence but also in improving the game with their very presence. These cheaters do nothing more for me than reduce the true professionals to the level of petty thieves who will do anything for a dollar.
Here’s a novel idea: Why don’t we start paying people for the benefits they provide to society? Less money for drugged-up athletes who entertain and more money for people who risk their lives to defend us or spend their lives educating others.

LikeDislikeAbsolutely NOT. I can’t imagine trying to regulate the industry if these types of drug bans were lifted especially with the recruiters seeking younger and younger talent each yr. Also, what would be the next level of performance?

LikeDislikeno i don’t think so – these are people who are in the limelight and their success should be based off hard work, practice, and raw talent. otherwise everyone could just do this.
