My Question of the Day for 23 March 2010 – UPDATED
My Question of the Day: Even if you enjoy shopping, waiting in line is almost never fun. Imagine you’re at one of your favorite stores during its busiest time of the day. You’ve waited patiently in a long line to purchase two or three items that are going off sale today while other people in front of you seem to be buying out the store. As you’re approaching the cashier to have your turn, someone rushes in front of you and says, “I’ve only got these two things. You don’t mind, do you?” What do you say/do?
My 2 Cents: If a person asks me if he/she can go in front of me in line, I usually allow him/her to go ahead, as long as I’m not in a hurry and all the people behind me have no problem with it.
If a person just assumes it’s OK to jump in front of me in line, I won’t agree to allow him/her to go ahead of me under any circumstances. I don’t even address that person. I direct my comments to the cashier and let him/her know I’m next, and I’d appreciate it if he/she would honor that. I’ve never had a cashier refuse me.

It depends. If I only have two things, I tell them that we have the same number of items and that yes, I do mind. If I have a bunch of things, I go ahead and let them cut in front of me.

LikeDislikeOne of the perks of being a burly black man with a shaved head is that things like this never happen to me, ever…lol. If it does, it means I'm going soft.
Seriously though, I would politely tell them to get back in line.

LikeDislikeI step right back in front of them and tell them yes, I do mind in fact.

LikeDislikeDepends on my mood. That happened to me this weekend and I let them go. Also bc they were pushing 80 I let it slide. But if I am pressed for time I reply yes I do mind.

LikeDislikeBack of da line sch-weetie, back of da line. I hate that & don't get me started on those 16 item folks in the 15 item checkout line.

LikeDislikeI'd step right back in front of them. Courtesy must first be extended before it can be received. Translation, it's up to me to allow a person to go ahead of me in line, not the other way around. I will allow a person in front of me if I see they only have an item or two or if they're a kid (have even paid the tax for them).

LikeDislikeI kindly reply that I do mind and have been waiting for a long time and just go checkout.
