My Question of the Day for 18 March 2010 – UPDATED
My Question of the Day: Niccolo Machiavelli said “It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both.” Since so many people these days claim that they fear nothing and no one, I’m going to remove “fear” from the equation. My question to you: is it better to be loved or respected, if you cannot be both?
My 2 Cents: If I cannot have both love and respect, I would choose to be respected. I can accomplish more in life by being respected, even if I’m not loved or liked. If I’m respected, people believe I have honor and integrity, and maybe they will grow to like and then love me. Then again, maybe they won’t, but I’ll still have earned their respect.

LikeDislikeMy vote is for love: even if you get no respect, love can get you through it. And there are so many kinds of love – filial, sexual, companionate, romantic – that we can have them all and still not tire! Respect is too stand-offish to even compare.

LikeDislikeI'd rather be loved & hugged, instead of respected and saluted.

LikeDislikeIm going with love. Love will make you strive and endure things that you usually would not. People put thier lives on the line, strive for excellence, and accept new and different things for love. I can not say the same for respect. Respect is great for shorterm, like 8 hours on the job. But I can not imagine a life without love. To love someone or eventhing something and in turn get love back from a person, or have people love your work is an amazing sometimes undescribable feeling. I feel respect has boundaries, and love has no boundaries.

LikeDislikeLove is a necessity. We can not live without love. People without love go on killing sprees or blow themselves up for their “cause”. Respect will get you further in life. But love will give you life.

LikeDislikeI'd rather be loved. Love is a much stronger force and will motivate someone to go out of their way for you much more than respect ever could.

LikeDislikerespect is relative. It can be the same as feared if you mean power. Or it can mean admired. I would definitely choose the latter over love. Respect is earned by having core values. To earn respect you need morals, ethics, conviction, etc. Love is a given and while you may not be surrounded by it, you can always buy a dog.
