The Harder Question: Do you think castrating (chemically or physically) convicted pedophiles would deter such behavior in others?

No and it has proven so. While there is moderate reduction of the urge to violate that the pedophiles have, sex crime pedophilia still has the highest rate of recidivism and the problem is a severe psychopathic personality disorder vs. someone who suffers from like bipolar or schizophrenia. There may be mixed-pathologies: personality disorder with depression, but overall a pedophile has issues with not knowing or caring if the violating behavior is wrong/hurts the child. More studies need to be done to truly understand how to treat this disorder.

LikeDislikeI don't think that would make any difference. Even if your sexual drive comes from your crotch, the desires that pedophiles follow come from mental issues.
I think an even harder question is if pedophilia is a treatable mental illness.

LikeDislikeNo. People with these types of mental illnesses can't stop themselves. It doesn't matter what the consequences are. These people also can't really be rehabilitated, so castration in one way or another is a necessity in preventing future incidents.
