My Question of the Day for 19 February 2010 – UPDATED
My Question of the Day: If you could be the boss at your job for one day, and you were able to make a change that couldn’t be reversed even after you went back to your regular position, what change would you make in your workplace?
My 2 Cents: For all employees, I’d create a super flex plan that would allow them to work fewer days and more hours per day, as long as their time totals 40 hours by the end of the week.
If an employee wanted to work his/her 40 hours in three days, that would be fine, as long as his/her work is completed and it doesn’t conflict with the schedules of clients outside our business.
In this area (DC-MD-VA), that would help get a few more cars off the road. It would also give employees more hours off for personal appointments, family time, rest and relaxation.

We have a thing where we the workers want to do 4 day, 10 hour work week so we can be off three days a week. And the managers say, “Nope…”

LikeDislikeAs boss I would tell the woman who brings her 5 children to work everyday that she's no longer allowed to do that.

LikeDislikeI would replace management with experienced employees and send them to leadership training, and provide them with coaches and buddies that are more experienced so they could learn. After that I would change the metrics we are measured on to something realistic.

LikeDislikeI would make changes to company perks. If your butt sits in the office all day, umm you don't need a company-issued cell phone. Use of company vehicles would be limited to trips outside metro area. We've got a bunch of guys that think these cars are for their personal use & that really irks me. There's never a car available when I need to use one for a day trip. Lastly, those steak dinners…ummm no more. If the company's gotta cut back, so do you. Overnight trips don't mean you get to splurge, it's the company's money…NOT yours.
Yeah, I'd get rid of some of the company perks.

LikeDislikeI would eliminate the bureaucracy. There are too many managers in between the bottom and the top and when each one has their own priorities things become very cluttered at the bottom. This is one of the reasons a company can have such disparity between their product and their customer service (lol, not calling any companies out, but if you follow me on twitter you know who…). A company's vision gets extremely cloudy after everyone has placed their fingerprint on it.

LikeDislikeIf I was my boss for a day I would replace the person who is my boss. I would hire a more proactive, experienced, and strategic manager. It would make all the difference at my job and hopefully bring about a MUCH needed vision type change.
