Help for Haiti

by Faydra Deon on 12 January 2010

Haiti was rocked by a 7.0+ earthquake on 12 January 2010.

The following links will take you to aid organizations where you can donate to help the people of Haiti rebuild their lives.

Do your own research before donating to ANY charity, even one of which you’ve heard. You can go to Charity Navigator to get started. We want to make sure that your hard, earned finances get to the people who need it most.

If you know of other credible organizations accepting donations on behalf of Haiti, please add that information to the comments on this page.

Most of the links that follow take you DIRECTLY to the donation page on each site. This is designed to get you right to where you need to go without delay.

I work for an organization called World Wide Village, Inc. (www.worldwidevillage.org). Our geographical focus is Haiti (especially Leogane and surrouding areas) and we have been in Haiti since long before the earthquake. Our mission, goals, and projects are all listed on the website. Please check it out!

Ajan is a Danish initiative crowdsourcing microfinance of small businesses, favoring groups of single mothers and amputees, though other recipients are welcome as well. In order to get maximum effect out of every dollar spent, activities are narrowed down to one local community at a time. Ajan is presently on the lookout for partners involved with shelters and relocation of homeless Haitians.

In light of wyclef’s sketchy accounting practices perhaps he’s foundation isn’t the best of places to donate money. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2010/0114102wyclef1.html?link=rssfeed

This is why the last part of my page asks those who plan to donate to do their homework about the organizations they’re donating through.

Reply

Orion 16 January 2010 at 20:53

Good point. Just thought if you knew there were accounting issues and such you might amend the list. In the interest of your visitors.

Reply

Faydra Deon 16 January 2010 at 21:42

I’m not removing any organization from the list.

Again, anyone planning to donate should do their research on the organization s/he plans to donate through.

Thanks for sharing what you found during your research. I posted your original comment so others could take advantage of the “legwork” you already did and make their own decision.

As an aside, Wyclef Jean tweeted a statement about the allegations against his organization. Jean also created a video to address the issue.

Mennonite Central Committee, a faith-based organization with staff already in Port-au-Prince, is another place to add to your list:
