My Question of the Day: Should driver’s licenses be rescinded (taken away) at a certain age?

I don’t think that they should automatically be rescinded at a specific age but I do believe that at the age of 55, it should be mandatory that the the entire test be taken again. ie, eye exam, written and driven. I believe that around that age, a persons reaction time is definitely slower and could possibly increase the possibility of an accident. I know for a fact that the eyes have a tendancy to wear down towards that age as well. I’m not saying that all of the elderly fall under this category but since it is a possibility, to prohibit discrimination, it should be mandatory for everyone within that age group. That way, if they pass, they have not so much to worry about. If they don’t pass, we may have saved a few lives, including the driver.

LikeDislikeAge ain’t nothin but a number, however, we’re all well aware that you start to lose reaction time and visual abilities as you age. You shouldn’t have your license rescinded just for being old, but you should have to get tested more often to renew that license.

LikeDislikeI don’t think age alone should be a determining factor; however, I’d suggest once a person reaches a certain age, there should be a annual test given for an elderly person to keep their license. I’m not sure if such a test exists at this time. I work with the elderly and it does concern me that some of the people I’ve met are still driving. We’ve had to make phone calls to MVA about some of them although there are others who are well into their 80s and are still physically able to drive and cognitively in tact and I’d hate for their license (and ability to get around) be taken from them just because of their age. Good question!
