My Question of the Day for 18 November 2009 – RESULTS

The Question: Are zoos a good idea?

My 2 Cents: I remember going to the zoo on field trips when I was in grade school. I don’t recall being that excited about the outing, and I only went because the entire class was going. I’m sure I had a good time being with my classmates, but I don’t recall being that thrilled about watching and learning about the animals.

The thing I always thought about was their cages. It’s always seemed wrong to me to cage anything.

I agree with @rishaholmes. With the invention of television, VHSs/DVDs and now the web, children can learn about animals in their natural habitats all over the world. We don’t need to remove animals from their surroundings anymore to know and learn about them.

Take a few moments to check out the tweets from Twitter on this subject:

PROTECTED TWEETER I do enjoy visiting the Zoo but it probably would be better to have the animals like in Animal Kingdom. They are not caged.

Gloria A NightShade10 depends on the zoo..just like animal shelters they all vary-some zoo’s breed endangered species…I enjoy the zoo if run right

Joshua Robinson soulrebelJ Nah. Real animal sanctuaries focus more on the animals than the visitors.

PROTECTED TWEETER For me they’re just “alright.” My mom however LOVES THEM! So I’ll go with YES!

PROTECTED TWEETER Zoos are not the problem & they are the finest research institutions for a global collection of Earth’s species

Dennis Kevin Gregory greg249 Personally, I think zoos are a great idea! Many folks would never get a chance to see so many of God’s creatures! Blessings!

Tomi Clark tclarkusa Yes…nice to learn how other animals live.

MsShana MissMeandI As long as the animals are properly taken care of, I think yes

Derek DerekIsNormal That’s a tough one, but I’ll say yes. The animals and treated and cared for properly.

Corrine Johnson LadyJay91 I think if they are managed right Zoo’s are a good idea.

Jason Stover TankaBar_JasonD for education and protection of an endagered spiecies I think they are all right.

Vicky BLKMGK I’m on the fence. I love being able to go see animals up close *but* most of them really should be in the wild.

PROTECTED TWEETER ditto @walkerdl

Daniel Walker walkerdl I think so, but they need to be well-maintained

Ali Dabbagh ATMMD For Children and people, yes it is. However, most animals in captivity there would disagree, I think

Pettra Tyus-Mapp Pettra88 No. No captivity is good.

Risha Holmes rishaholmes No, with the Internet and HD, just watch National Geographic NO ZOO…

mayqueen79 mayqueen79 Yes, but refuges are a better one. Hunters & Poachers aren’t going away, so we need some way to protect animals from them.

PROTECTED TWEETER Sure, they are fun and educational!

Atane Ofiaja atane Zoos are animal prisons.

lt md20737 Yes Maam gives kids the opportunity to learn without being in danger :)

Joshua Gibson JoshDamage I think they are a good idea. It exposes children to animals that they otherwise would not see. It also has educational value

Essence MoonBabi_Essi yes for extinct animals

Please note that I will be picking winners for the months in 2011 that have not been done yet. I've gotten behind, but I'm a woman of my word. Beginning, 01 January 2012, there will only be one winner per month, and that one winner will receive a $30 Amazon gift card. For the months in 2011 that still need winners, there will still be two, $20 gift card winners. The change will take effect starting 01 January 2012. See details.
