The Question: Should people put photos/videos of the children in their lives on non-password-protected websites?

My 2 Cents: Start by reading Guardians of Their Smiles if you think it’s paranoia to believe others will use the images/videos of your children.

The internet has made it possible for us to share images of ourselves and our family members with others around the globe. This isn’t a bad thing. Actually, it’s a very good thing and it’s cost-effective to boot.

However, people should not put photos/videos of the children in their lives on non-password-protected websites. That’s simply too much exposure for our little ones.

Maybe this is a stretch, so please feel free to comment in the opposite perspective or point of view if you happen to absolutely disagree with me, but I assert that we violate our children’s right to privacy when we plaster their image all over the web. We take away their right to choose their own “cyber” image when we make that choice for them before they can make it for themselves. It’s almost as bad as taking out credit cards in your child’s name, because you’ve ruined  your credit.

Share your pictures and videos with close friends and family members through secure, password-protected, limited-access channels, where you have control over who sees the images/videos, and where you also have some control over how those images/videos are used. This means you MUST read the terms of service stipulations for third-party sites where you post images/videos. However, do not put images/video of your precious little ones anywhere on the web where anyone, whether their intent for viewing and/or using your images/video is for good or for bad, has access to them. You could possibly be setting up yourself, and even your child, for challenges that are avoidable.

Think before you share, and think how you share.

EpicView_SP I say they shouldn’t. Children’s privacy should be guarded. You never know how people might try to use the photos/videos.

shoopeeshoop depending on what kind of site it is and the kind of pic or video they are sharing I think it is up to the parent’s judgment.

ObiOrion Yes they should. They should also never complain should they come across those same images/movies elsewhere online.
