The Question: From your perspective, a very disturbing incident happens at work/school. After doing some informal inquiries among your peers, it seems you’re the only person who is actually disturbed by the incident. You can keep quiet and allow the status quo to prevail, or you can speak up and let it be known that you, if no one else, are/were disturbed by the incident. What do you do?
My 2 Cents: When something or someone offends and/or upsets you, and you say nothing, you’ve given him/her de facto permission to repeat the offense.
I’m not one to even concern myself with whether other people were offended and/or upset. If it insults my sensibilities, I’m going to make it known and right away, especially if I find it very disturbing. There are no “let’s wait and see if it happens again” moments for me when it comes to very disturbing incidents. Action is required immediately.
