My Question of the Day for 15 October 2009 – RESULTS

The Question: Should sports teams with the names of people-groups as mascots consider changing their names?

My 2 Cents: According to Dictionary.com, the definition of “mascot” is as follows: an animal, person, or thing adopted by a group as its representative symbol and supposed to bring good luck.

I think no sport team should be named for any people-group, especially if that people-group has registered objection to the use of its name for such a purpose. People talk about tradition and that it isn’t that big of a deal. Tradition alone is no reason to continue offensive and deragotory practices, and apparently it’s a big deal to some if there are lawsuits being filed and websites dedicated to eradicating the practice. Rhonda L. BaylessRhonnybay Names like “Red Skins” should have been banned long along.

PROTECTED TWEETER Yes. They need to change their names. There are many respectful animals/events to change their names to in languages

VickyBLKMGK naw

samir hamidevrydeypeep Tribal names should be only supported by the tribes themselves, if the team or mascot is certainly of that tribe, then so be it

samir hamidevrydeypeep Offensive names are discriminatory. I am repulsed by the Redskins as a team name. Its borderline sick

samir hamidevrydeypeep Absoulutely yes!! There are plenty of inanimate words or animal names that can project mascot personality. get creative

Andre Hadji JonesHadji4ever I do think during these times of on-going racial tension it would be appropriate 4 those teams 2 change their names.

ltmd20737 No.. If ppl dont like it dont support the team.. That easy

Patty Hilton Beck DomesticP I don’t think so.

Colombian Coffeecolombiancoffee yes, they should bc they’re “mascot names” tend to be derogatory names for groups of people.

Please note that I will be picking winners for the months in 2011 that have not been done yet. I've gotten behind, but I'm a woman of my word. Beginning, 01 January 2012, there will only be one winner per month, and that one winner will receive a $30 Amazon gift card. For the months in 2011 that still need winners, there will still be two, $20 gift card winners. The change will take effect starting 01 January 2012. See details.
